This is a good looking and well made box, new for 2005, using full grade ABS plastic. It's TÜV approved for loads to 75kg, thanks to its integral steel reinforcing sections, and comes as standard with a "silver glossy" lid on a matt black base. The finish is somewhere between eggshell and gloss. Other features:
- Dual Side opening so you can choose to use it on either side of the vehicle. You'll find it easier to load and unload if it's fitted towards the edge of the vehicle; you'll always be stretching if you fit it centrally. There's a 'One Key System' compatible central locking system on each side of the box.
- Thule's new "diffuser technology" - the reinforcing ribs are longitudinal, suggesting that this box will be almost silent in use. Our experience of using the Atlantis boxes suggests that they are in fact no quieter than other quality boxes. The reality is that (1) all boxes generate additional drag and wind noise (and are therefore best removed ASAP when not in use) and (2) it's the exposed roof bars that make most of the noise anyway. But these design features do help to the extent that if you buy a quality box you probably won't notice a significant noise unless you decide to drive with the sun roof open. Atera, Autoform, Fapa and Kamei boxes have similar design features. Note the 44cm height of this box; this boosts the nominal capacity but also increases the wind resistance!
- "Power-Grip" - you just turn each wheel to draw the fitting claws around the roof bars, making this box easy to fit to all known roof bars. Thule's new Power-Grip gets around any need to use adapters to fit boxes to unusual shaped bars (they fit bars up to 80mm wide), although the downside is that these fittings take up an unreasonable amount of space in the box, reducing both the width and depth of items that can be carried. (Please note that our general advice for all roof boxes is to pack into squishy bags rather than suit cases.)
- If you are using aerobars we recommend that you remove these bulky Power-Grip fittings (remove 1 screw and they lift out very easily) and use the T-track aerobar adapters; these provide an invisible box to bar fitting as well as allowing you to make full use of the box capacity. Check the pop-up links to work out which adapters to buy.
- Box weight 18kg. Before loading the box, check your vehicle's maximum permitted loading limit, taking into account the weight of the roof bars, the weight of the box, and the weight of the contents.

This season we are offering a free roof box hoist to give you a superb deal. Boxes are bulky items so the ideal place to store them is above your car in the garage, or perhaps in a shed. Many people will leave the box attached to the bars, and also use the box for storage. If you don't need a box hoist, our alternative gift is a set of 3 Fasty straps - 0.5m, 1.5m and 3.0m. Although of much less financial value they will be useful for 1,001 things, time and again. To order the 3 straps, 'untick' the Free box hoist "Order Item?" tick box by clicking in the box, and then tick the Free straps one instead. Please note that these free items are included at 10p for our record keeping purposes only, and that only one box hoist or one set of straps will be included per roof box order.
Long Wide boxes are really too awkward for one person to lift; please be careful!
