Family roof boxes
Most of our customers are part of a family and many will buy other types of box, so what do we mean by “Family boxes”? We mean that many families want to carry bikes as well as luggage, and they’ll usually need to carry at least one bike on the roof, often two bikes. Family boxes are therefore medium-wide, leaving space on the roof bars for at least one and probably two bike carriers, especially if your roof bars include aluminium aerobars.
We’ve put medium-long medium-wide and long medium-wide boxes into this category. If you’re a family of five it makes sense to start by looking at the long medium-wide boxes.
Deciding which roof box to buy depends more than anything else on what shape of box you want. The shape you go for should depend on whether you need to leave space on the roof bars for other items (typically bike carriers) and of course whether you have particularly long items to carry, e.g. skis.
Budget is also important but bear in mind that a roof box should be expected to last for many family holidays and weekends away; it should give many years of solid and reliable service. We don’t stock any of the really cheap boxes because there are real doubts about their safety and build quality.
A roof box is a large item that is usually difficult to hide away “out of sight and out of mind”, so you won’t want to be stuck with “the wrong one”. We therefore offer a unique 90 day exchange scheme. Roof boxes are our specialist subject and we know from experience which ones will last the pace over many years, and which ones often don’t, regardless of the manufacturers’ guarantees. We’re therefore confident about our comments, recommendations and star ratings, but if you buy from us (and we hope you will) you may well be buying a roof box model that is “sight unseen”, and if you haven’t used a roof box before you probably won’t know what to expect.
We’re also showing our whole roof box range as a complete list - see Roof Box List, organised by shape, which has links to all the boxes. The list may look confusing, and you may ask yourself “How do I know which to buy?” You’ll see that we’ve identified a box in each category as our “House box”, our equivalent of a House wine. The House wines in decent restaurants are good, a very safe bet, and good value for money. Our reputation rests on our recommendations and our happy customers, but spot one difference between a House wine and a House box - if you don’t like what you’ve chosen you can exchange it, even after use!
