Why it's important to select the correct vehicle

Vehicle

This is a statement of the obvious, but it’s essential to choose roof bars that will fit your vehicle.
Our database will show all the roof bars that are available. Many cars can have different types of car roof, for example an option for a plain roof, and an option for a roof with raised roof rails.

If you see options then you need to choose the one that’s correct for your vehicle.

Saris Bones 2 bike carrier, grey, no. SAB2-GY

Saris Bones. A quirky name for a one-off design, but that's because Saris have the patents on several unique and very clever features. The Saris Bones 2 will carry two bikes safely on the majority of hatchbacks, estates, MPVs, saloons and convertibles, using three straps per side - top, bottom and middle - to hold the carrier stable and firm. It's very quick and easy to set up and to fold flat again when not in use. The anti-sway straps, a Saris exclusive, make a real difference, and holding the bikes at different heights should also help prevent important components from rubbing against each other. We think it's great.

Use this page to order the grey Bones 2. We know that most of the pictures show the blue Bones 3; we'll photograph the Bones 2 and the other colours in due course.

Other features and specifications:

  • The injection-moulded arms and legs ("bones") are made from a plastic resin and are said to be the strongest on the market. Most of the weight of the bikes is taken on the Bumper Legs and the rear bumper.
  • The curve in the Rear Legs allows the Bones to be used on many saloons and convertibles where the boot spoiler would normally prevent a rack being used.
  • The splined aluminium extrusion and the arm and leg joints are designed to absorb a useful amount of force, minimising the load on the straps.
  • All three straps pass through the aluminium extrusion, helping to keep everything well-integrated and tidy, and each hook is marked as appropriate - Upper, Side, Lower. Details of this sort make a big difference to setting up speed.
  • There are numbers on the arms and legs which, with practise, will help you set up the Bones to your ideal configuration without the hassle of trial or error.
  • The hold-down and anti-sway straps have a softer plastic lining; generally all parts that come into contact with the vehicle and bikes are soft enough to prevent friction damage as long as both faces are clean before fitting, i.e. a dirty bumper might end up being scuffed, ditto a muddy bike tube.
  • Check out the fitting video which shows the grey Bones 3. It gives an excellent overview of the key features of the rack, as well as being a reference for your first fitting.
  • Note that the rear bike should be held higher than the others; this will reduce the strain on the carrier and help prevent friction damage. It's up to you to protect your bikes - most people don't seem to bother but others use e.g. bits of old carpet or closed-cell foam mat. See below for the Saris Protect-O-Pads.
  • Bikes need to be properly balanced before being placed on the Arms; if they aren't they'll be trying to twist the Bones, and that's obviously not sensible. Please use "artificial cross bars" as required. We aren't stocking the Saris Bike Beam Bar as we already stock a number of similar beams, of which the BUZZ RACK frame adapter is both the best and the best value.
  • We're including a 150cm strap, free of charge, for use as both a safety strap and to help hold everything tight; we've already pre-selected this for you. We do this for all rear carriers, tow ball and rear door mounted, including only one strap per carrier, even if you do succeed in abusing our online ordering system to order more!
  • All Bones components are 100% recyclable, although with the Saris "lifetime warranty" this isn't such a consideration as it might be.
  • Designed by Fabio Pedrini, and manufactured in Madison, Wisconsin.

Saris doesn't publish an up to date European application guide. We've used our best judgment in linking this product to specified vehicles where strap on racks are known to be suitable, but it's up to you to be confident about the stability before using the rack, and of course to read the fitting instructions very carefully, and to do as instructed. If there's doubt about the strength of the mounting for the Upper hooks - for example you must never hook them onto glass - then you should use the Saris Hatch Huggers, listed below. If we know that these are required, we have already selected them for you.

Many cars require a lighting board (shown as an option below) and number plate when using this rack as the bikes may obscure the lights and/or number plate.

Delivery charges and arrangements:

We charge a contribution towards delivery costs, depending on what you order, where you live, and how quickly you want the goods.

For most UK addresses, the charge for our two to three day service is £5.50 (£9.50 for orders including a roof box) and our charge for Next Working Day deliveries is £8.50 (£12.50 for orders involving a roof box). AutoSock, shoe chains, RUD i-Sock, and small spare parts, are charged £3.95 (Royal Mail Tracked), £4.95 (Royal Mail Express Tracked) or £5.95 (express courier, usually Next Working Day).

There are different charges for any delivery including a sea crossing, and deliveries to Skye - we will contact you with a quote on receipt of order.

Orders for Next Working Day delivery need to be received by 4.00pm.

There are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays, except for postable items where Royal Mail has a Saturday delivery. Next Working Day orders placed on a Friday will be delivered on the Monday, Next Working Day orders placed on a Saturday will be delivered on the Tuesday.

We are very flexible with our deliveries and will aim to deliver on a day and at an address which suits you. Goods can usually be left without signature - we prefer this with roof boxes. There's a "Special Delivery Instructions" box in the checkout area where we'll ask you to choose a typical instruction and then amend it to suit your particular requirements.

No retailer or courier company can ever "guarantee" a Next Working Day delivery. All courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems as can happen to everyone else, including snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address, or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.
