You need more space for removing traditional chains than you do when fitting them. When removing traditional chains you need to push your fingers down behind the tyre to find the join in the cable and to grip both sides of the cable. Note that you need less space for fitting and removing AutoSock, and that fitting space is not a consideration for Automatic chains or for Ladder track chains.
