There has long been a market for carrying luggage boxes behind vehicles rather than on the roof, mainly for ease of access. Most of these rear boxes are quite basic, and are usually fixed to separate platforms or onto tow bar mounted bike carriers. Only one brand that we know of has really given this sector the attention it deserves, TowBox, a brand created and developed over more than 15 years by Spain’s premier designer and manufacturer of towbar systems, Enganches Aragón. They have created a range of rear boxes that are strong, secure, and water-resistant to IP44. TowBox V3 can not only be tilted, via a control handle on the outer edge of the box, but it slides away from the rear of the vehicle before tilting, to allow easy access to the boot space - this is a really useful feature (unfortunately it won't tilt far enough to allow most vertical tailgates to open - see the specifications tab for more details). To keep the centre of gravity as close to the vehicle as possible, and to allow for maximum loading, the TowBox V3 slides over the tow ball coupling system before driving, another very neat solution. TowBox V3 also has a 2nd mounting position, which gives a bigger gap between the box and the back of the vehicle. This feature allows the TowBox V3 to be used on vehicles with a spare wheel (the maximum load is reduced to between 30 - 40kg if you have to slide it out to accommodate the spare wheel). TowBox V3 are very stylish, with really smart five-function LED lights, and have been designed with efficient aerodynamics in mind. They even have trolley-style wheels, allowing the box, empty or loaded, to be wheeled from your base and placed onto the towball. Rear-mounted boxes produce less drag than roof-mounted boxes, and are generally a better solution for electric vehicles. There’s no doubt that, all other things being equal (vehicle load weight, driving style and speed, and wind speed) a 400 litre roof box will use more of the vehicle's energy than a 400 litre box mounted behind the vehicle, although on the downside a rear mounted box will of course impose many more limitations on shape and size than a roof box, or an open roof rack. Additional drag is of particular importance for electric cars because the extra energy used will reduce the range available before recharging is necessary – fossil-fuelled vehicles usually have a longer range, can refuel much more quickly, and can carry their own extra fuel if necessary. Specifications:
TowBox are manufactured in Zaragoza (Saragossa) in Spain's Aragon region by Enganches Aragón, an ISO 9001:2015 company that is now over 30 years old, and is a major European manufacturer of tow bar systems. The first TowBox entered the market in 2009, with the V3 launched in 2019 - all models have been refined over time. We are aware that there are web shops based in the EU who are offering to sell TowBox V3 to UK customers at prices that look much cheaper than our pricing. Just be aware that their prices probably do not include the UK's 20% VAT (VAT is payable on imports over £135) and also the customs clearance charges that the courier will make. To give you an idea of the likely VAT cost, a product shipped in from the EU with a price of £850 and a £50 freight cost, so a total £900, would have VAT to pay before delivery of £180. |
