This is an increasingly popular box shape, an evolution in box design to reflect the reduced length of modern skis as well as to leave some space on the roof bars for other items. In spite of their different capacities we can get the same amount of standard luggage into each of these boxes, demonstrating that it's length, width, and low profile box to bar fittings which make the most difference to actual usefulness. Box height is the least important measurement unless you have something specific to carry. On this subject, if you find that you can't get your children's buggy into the roof box, usually because it's too wide and deep, we suggest that you put the buggy in the boot and the contents of the boot into the roof box.

We've always liked KAMEI's Delphin range – they’re the preferred choice of all our staff here. No frills, but they have the strongest locking system on the market, are very user friendly, seem to last for ever, never go wrong, win product tests, and keep looking good when other more obviously styled boxes look a bit weird even 3 years up the line. When we did mail order roof box hire the Delphins were the only boxes which could stand the punishment. The new generation Delphin range was launched in 2007 / 2008, with key features retained, e.g. the push button locking system, low profile sliding fittings front and back, gas struts, DUROKAM plastic, but with new sizes and styling. The 340s have the same aerofoil base as the award winning Corvara 390s, but a different shaped lid. They're available in right or left hand opening, and there are also versions in KAMEI's "carbon design" plastic - see below. Suitable for carving skis up to 180cm.
If you think that 340 litres seems a bit small, don't worry. KAMEI are scrupulous about measuring capacity, but other manufacturers are prone to exaggeration. The Auto Express testers didn't ask for this box but their photographs show that they fitted as much into a KAMEI 390 litre than into another brand's 480 litre! Low profile box to bar fittings also make a difference, but don't get too hung up about nominal capacity...

If you're looking for a box of the highest quality, narrow enough to leave space for e.g. canoes, kayaks, bike carriers, then the award winning Corvara 310 should be top of your shortlist, especially as it now comes in dual side opening format ("DuoLift"), giving you complete flexibility about where to position it. The single side opening version of this box won ADAC's important roof boxes test in December 2006 - ADAC is Europe's largest motoring organisation. These new Corvara DuoLifts are as good as they come - check the next page for further details.
Check out the 2 box options and discounts at the bottom of this page if you want to carry 2 boxes at once.

We like the looks and overall build quality, including steel reinforcing ribs. It's a good box for those who also want to carry e.g. 2 or 3 bikes (depends on bar length, and whether aerobars are used) but don't want a bigger, full length box, e.g. because they have a hatchback.

Thule EasyBase 949 and options. Thule Easybasket 948-3, Thule EasyBike 948-1 and 948-2,
Thule BackUp 900 and Thule EasyBag 948-4

These are our roof box product range pages. You'll see that we've arranged the boxes by shape, cheapest first.
If this is your first visit to our site, and you
haven't already done so, please read our information pages. This should help to narrow the options considerably. Basically, you need to decide which shape of box to go for.
KAMEI's elegant Corvara boxes incorporate the best of their engineering innovations - gas strut assisted dual side opening, the "Pull down to lock" central locking system (all the virtues of central locking but none of the hassles), sliding box to bar fittings front and back, an ultra low profile "push-push" quick fitting system (lean into the box and, with minimal effort, push the spring loaded tensioning arm up and down a few times to tighten the box onto the bars), a 75kg loading limit. There are even closed cell foam runners on the base to stop an empty box vibrating on the bars.
This may well be the box for people who appreciate undoubted quality and technical innovation, and want a big box which will leave enough space on Atera, Prorack or Thule roof bars for e.g. a bike carrier. The Corvara 310, the Long Thin version of this box, won the prestigious ADAC roof boxes test in December 2006.
We still have a few of the single side boxes available:

KAMEI's Corvara family of roof boxes includes
all the hallmarks of the KAMEI brand - smart engineering, bespoke quality
materials, top build quality - but also the most savvy and user-friendly fitting
and locking systems that you'll find on any boxes. And now the 'DuoLift' boxes
are available, dual side opening using gas struts which makes the whole opening
and closing process uniquely smooth. The maximum load limit has also been
increased to 75kg.
These boxes have an elegance and all round sophistication that only Thule's Spirit series can match, with pricing that is both realistic and sensible; the DuoLift boxes are only marginally more expensive than the single siders. The 390K was launched in early 2008, so it was the Long Thin version, the Corvara 310, which won ADAC's roof boxes test in December 2006, the most thorough roof box test ever devised which focussed primarily on safety issues. ADAC is Europe's largest motoring organisation.
This box seems bigger than its 390 litres might suggest. Its external width and height are comparable to the biggest boxes in this sector, but it's a tad shorter than some, one of the design briefs being to look just right on a VW Golf, allowing the rear hatch to be fully opened but without too much front overhang. It's also designed to carry carving skis up to 180cm long, as well as a family's summer touring gear; the consensus here is that KAMEI have got it just right. Choose between plain silver, titanium metallic (a deep gloss silver-grey, shown) or gloss black.
We aim to keep a few of the cheaper right side opening Corvara 390Ks in stock:

The KAMEI Delphin 380 won 2nd prize in the 2008 Auto Express roof box test (and its big brother the Delphin 470 was Runner Up in their 2009 test). It includes KAMEI’s superb “Comfort Sliding Fitting”, a low profile box to bars fitting system with grippers which hold the U bolts in place, before the butterfly nuts are applied, preventing them from falling back onto the car roof. Which? rated the Delphin 375 as both the most secure and the most waterproof roof box in their 2007 test – the new Delphin 380 is just as well made, and is available in both left hand opening format and right hand opening format.
“Quality is excellent – the plastic is easily the sturdiest in the group, and all lock catches are metal. These are self-latching, but there isn’t a single-point release as found on the Corvara. However, this drawback is more than made up for by the ease of closing the box when loaded."

Atera
Carver II 410
400 litres, 178 x 78 x 42cm
£179.95
The Atera Carver II 410 is slightly shorter and narrower than the Carver II 440 listed below. It will appeal to those who, aesthetically, don't want their roof box to stick out over the windscreen, or to people who want a decent sized luggage carrier and plenty of space for a roof mounted bike carrier (aerobars are recommended if you need 108cm or 110cm bars). This box will take carving skis to 170cm. If the box is for family use (4 people, e.g.) and you aren't sure whether to choose the Carver II 410 or the Carver II 440, we recommend the bigger box.
KAMEI Husky
330 litres, 190 x 75 x 38cm
£174.95
This new box from KAMEI includes all the essential attributes of any KAMEI box - good looks, ease of use, top quality mouldings, excellent security, wide opening on gas struts, safety tests that are up with the best, but all the non-essential items are of a cheaper specification, giving a useful saving on what you'd normally expect to pay for KAMEI quality.
Atera
Carver II 440
430 litres, 192 x 82 x 42cm
£249.95
The Carver II 440 is a large Medium Long Medium Wide box, an all round family luggage carrier which should allow space on the roof bars for at least one bike carrier, especially if fitted to aerobars, and will take carving skis to 185cm. It squares up as a worthy alternative to the Thule Atlantis 200 / 780 boxes, having dual side opening with 3 lock / hinge points on each side for extra security and strength, and a 75kg loading limit thanks to its steel reinforcing ribs.

£294.95
>> KAMEI
Delphin 340K "carbon design" right hand opening
>> KAMEI
Delphin 340K "carbon design" LEFT hand opening
This is one of the smartest boxes on the market - KAMEI's carbon design plastic is a deep black gloss with a 'carbon fibre effect' finish to it - slightly stripy, incredibly smart. It's proving popular with people who value superb engineering, build quality, exclusivity and style more highly than a need for gadgets and gizmos such as central locking and dual side opening.
Atera
Carver II 330
330 litres, 192 x 64 x 42cm
£199.95
The Atera Carver II 330 is similar to the Thule Atlantis 600, i.e. a medium to long box which is narrow enough to allow for two roof mounted bike carriers (aerobars recommended if you need 108cm or 110cm bars). It will probably be too small for a family of four, but may be entirely suitable for e.g. a couple taking both a dog and their cycles on holiday. Right hand opening only.
Atera
Carver II 550
550 litres, 215 x 90 x 43cm
£284.95
The new Atera Carver II 550 is similar to the Thule Atlantis 900, having dual side opening with 3 lock / hinge points on each side for extra security and strength, and a 75kg loading limit thanks to its steel reinforcing ribs.
Atera
Zenith 650
390 litres, 192 x 82 x 37cm
£299.95
The Atera Zenith 650 is a mid sized Medium Long Medium Wide box that should allow space on the roof bars for at least one bike carrier, especially if fitted to aerobars, and will take carving skis to 185cm. Note its external height (37cm), which is quite low - this improves the aerodynamics and the looks but please check the height of what you want to carry before ordering. Assume that the internal height is 32cm. There aren't many deep gloss black (non-metallic) boxes on the market, and this one is pitched against the Thule Spirit 780 "glossy black" (380 litres, 196 x 78 x 33).
Atera
Zenith 850
490 litres, 215 x 90 x 37cm
£299.95
The Atera Zeniths share many features with the Carver II series but use top notch plastic. The Zenith 850 is the full width of many roof bars, but if your bars are at least 120cm long, and you use aerobars, then there should be space for one bike carrier. Note its external height (37cm), which is quite low - this improves the aerodynamics and the looks but please check the height of what you want to carry before ordering. Assume that the internal height is 32cm. There aren't many deep gloss black (non-metallic) boxes on the market, and this one is a very worthy alternative to e.g. the Thule Spirit 820 "glossy black" (480 litres, 230 x 83 x 36) and much better value for money.

We have a limited number of the superb KAMEI Corvara 475 "White Star" DuoLift in a gloss white finish, a white top on a white base. Almost £395 a pop, but you're paying for exclusivity as well as quality, and of course they'll reflect the sun better than any other box available!
For more information see the Corvara 475 above.
Karrite (pronounced “Kar Rite”) is owned by Thule and is a box manufacturer based in Suffolk, making boxes for several own brand labels including e.g. Halfords, and using components often found in e.g. Thule boxes. Their Karrite branded Odyssey 320 is a rear opening box, decent quality, made of "Duotek", with a single rear lock and a 5 year guarantee. One of the advantages of rear opening, i.e. hinged from the front, is that you can access the box from both sides, making it easier to fit to the roof bars, and easier to load.
If you need roof bars as well, and there are CRUZ bars available for your vehicle, we'll do the whole package for only £140! Click here for details.
