Whispbar by Prorack engineers built a mini wind tunnel for the Frankfurt Automechanika trade fair in September 2008, capable of generating wind speeds up to 160 km/h. A range of standard European roof bar profiles were compared to the Whispbar, and the results were graphed. They’re compelling.
Whispbar by Prorack S-wing bars are a generation ahead of their competitors; they’ve been designed from first principles by people who have half a lifetime’s experience of using roof bars. It shows. Apart from the unique aerofoil-shaped bar it’s the sheer quality of design, materials and finish that sets them apart - you really need to handle them to appreciate this. Even the tools provided for fitting are designed or chosen to make the job as easy as possible, and there’s a space behind each locking cover to allow essential tools to be carried.
The big deal is the cross bar, the aluminium wing-shaped “Whispbar” blade that removes almost all the irritating whistle. Not only are Whispbar bars whisper quiet but they create so little drag that they can be left in place without any apparent effect on fuel consumption. That’s potentially a significant ‘real world’ saving in both time and fuel costs, especially for those who drive tall vehicles where fitting and removing roof bars on a regular basis is in reality a bit of a chore.
These certainly aren’t cheap bars, but we argue that they’re good value. Part of the genius of the S-wing system is that the same “Smart-Foot” is used for every type of roof type, including raised roof rails, flush mounted roof rails, T-tracks, Fixpoints, clamp on systems, even cars with gutters – it’s just a question of which adapter kit you use. With a bit of luck you’ll only need to buy a new adapter kit when you change car. You pay a bit more to start with, for sure, but the ongoing costs should be considerably less, and in the meantime you have all the other benefits.
You can even choose the style of bar that suits the look of your vehicle, and your lifestyle. The “flush bar” is the typical car manufacturer’s own brand style, with the feet at the end of the cross bar, but for maximum load carrying capacity and flexibility the “through bar” style is the better option.
