Why it's important to select the correct vehicle and tyre size
Vehicle
There are a surprising number of vehicles that cannot use traditional snowchains, the types that put chain on the inside of the wheel as well as on the tread. This is usually because there is not enough space between the wheels and the shock absorbers; this can be a problem for ordinary SUVs and 4x4s as well as for high performance cars.
You will find this important information in your car handbook - please check this before using your snowchains! Our database is intended to do the basic work for you but, with so many new vehicles and tyre sizes, it should only ever be treated as a guide.
Tyre size
Please also check your tyre size - if you buy incorrectly-sized chains they will be either too tight or too loose.
Ladder track chains
The good news is that car handbooks usually only refer to "traditional snowchains". Ladder track chains such as the Polaire GRIP and Spikes-Spider range only put chain over the tyre tread, so are not subject to these restrictions. They are also ideal for use on rear wheel drives where there is minimal space between the top of the wheel and the wheel arch.
How do I check my tyre size?
How do I check my tyre size?
You are looking for three numbers (occasionally just two numbers) shown on the edge of the tyre, e.g. 195 / 65 - R15
For info, what do these numbers mean?
195 is the tyre width in mm. 65 is the profile, the distance from the edge of the rim to the top of the tread (the tyre "wall") in mm, expressed as a percentage of the width, i.e. the tyre wall is 127mm high in this example (195 x 65). 15 is the "rim size" in inches (a complicated measurement).
Please confirm that your vehicle AND tyre size is shown correctly below

Important safety information: The purchase and use of snow chains is a technical business, and a complex one to manage in the online environment. These chains will fit around the tyres you have chosen but it's possible that they are not suitable for use with the combination of your particular make and model of car, and your tyre size. If you have only chosen your tyre size to reach this page, without reference to your type of car, please use the "Select make, Select model, Select tyre" menu on the Home page to try and find your car and tyre size: - If you find your car and tyre size, and only a small number of chains are listed, maybe only one option, these are your only safe options.
- If you don't find your car and tyre size, please check your vehicle handbook to see what it says about the use of snow chains. If it says, for example, "The use of snow chains is not permitted" or "No snow chains with a link size wider than 10mm may be used", this is important information!
Click on the warning triangle for more information about this very important issue: Fitting notes: These chains are quick and easy to fit. Have a look at the video. Points to note: - When you have pushed the chain around behind the wheel you hold both ends and lift both ends upwards. You want the hoop of chain to rise up under the car axle so that you can clip the two ends together near the top of the wheel. All modern snow chains are fitted in this way.
- The automatic chain tensioning system is a strong bungy device which pulls one-way bead grippers through an easy load steel ratchet. It's a simple and very clever system, allowing for fine adjustment, with no danger of slippage. Chain tensioning is necessary because the chains will generally "shake down" on the wheels once you move off, involving some self centering and movement of the chain on the face of the tyres. Without an automatic system you need to get out of the vehicle after a short distance and take up any new slack yourself.
- Practise fitting your chains a few times before you have to do it for real!
- You need both hands to fit snowchains, so if it is dark a head torch makes all the difference - see below.
Additional notes: - All Thule chains are made from case-hardened manganese nickel (MnNi) alloy steel to provide an optimum combination of strength and hardness.
- Chains will wear out if driven on tarmac or concrete. Thule's CG-9 chains can be reversed and fitted 'inside out' on the tyre so that both sides get equal wear, helping them to last longer.
- Each CG-9 chain link is 9mm high, D-shaped to make it bite well into snow and ice.
- Plastic alloy rim protectors are supplied for optional use - they'll help to prevent the steel chains from vibrating against any softer aluminium alloys and scratching them.
- These chains are supplied in a strong plastic case, together with a pair of plastic gloves, a kneeling mat, and a couple of emergency spare links (pliers are required).
- All Thule chains meet the requirements of Austria's Ö-Norm 5117 and Germany's TÜV.
We're also showing you a range of other winter motoring products which we're selling here at market leading prices, including a snow and ice windscreen protector, a telescopic snow shovel, and a snow brush - all of these items are almost essential kit for winter weather, especially we suggest the snow brush. Delivery FAQs
When will my order arrive?
There are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays, except for postable items where Royal Mail has a Saturday delivery. Express Delivery orders placed on a Friday (before 1pm) should be delivered on the Monday or Tuesday, Express Delivery orders placed on a Saturday or Sunday should be delivered on the Tuesday or Wednesday. The arrangements for Very Heavy Items are different and are shown above.
What about Next Working Day delivery?
Most Express delivery orders will arrive on the next working day, if the order is placed before the cut-off time (see above). Some will arrive on the second working day if there has been a "split-delivery". So-called “split deliveries” happen when the couriers do not have enough trailer space for everything that should be moved around the UK, so they will load what they can and leave the rest for the next trailer.
Is my delivery day guaranteed?
No retailer or courier company can ever "guarantee" a Next Working Day delivery. As well as split deliveries, all courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems as can happen to everyone else, including snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address, or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.
Do I need to be at home?
We are very flexible with our deliveries and will aim to deliver to an address which suits you – this does not need to be your home address. Goods can usually be left without signature - we prefer this with roof boxes. There's a "Special Delivery Instructions" box in the checkout area where we'll ask you to choose a typical instruction and then amend it to suit your particular requirements.

There are two parts to our snow chains offer this year:
(1) Clearance prices on many top branded snow chains, including RUD and Thule - an amazing opportunity for those who are quick off the mark! Thule (who are the biggest brand in the car racks market) have sold their snow chains division; the same chains are now being sold under the König brand. Thule branded chains have the same specifications as the König branded versions - all that has changed is the name on the chain and the name on the box.
(2) Multibuy discounts - significant discounts if you buy two pairs of snow chains at the same time, or one pair of chains and one pair of AutoSock: If you do either of these things, we will discount the snow chains as follows:
- König, Polaire and Spikes-Spider snow chains - at least 10% off!
- INNO, Maggi, RUD and Thule snow chains - at least 20% off! Up to 30% off where we have large overstocks.
As usual, you change the quantities in the Shopping Basket.
Many customers will, for example, use snow chains on their driving wheels for Alpine use, and use AutoSock on the non-driving wheels, especially if these are the steering wheels. Also note that AutoSock work very well in very wet snow, even on slush, where snowchains are often not suitable because they can't get any grip in the snow. So having both AutoSock and snowchains makes sense from at least two different perspectives.
