Why it's important to select the correct vehicle and tyre size
Vehicle
There are a surprising number of vehicles that cannot use traditional snowchains, the types that put chain on the inside of the wheel as well as on the tread. This is usually because there is not enough space between the wheels and the shock absorbers; this can be a problem for ordinary SUVs and 4x4s as well as for high performance cars.
You will find this important information in your car handbook - please check this before using your snowchains! Our database is intended to do the basic work for you but, with so many new vehicles and tyre sizes, it should only ever be treated as a guide.
Tyre size
Please also check your tyre size - if you buy incorrectly-sized chains they will be either too tight or too loose.
Ladder track chains
The good news is that car handbooks usually only refer to "traditional snowchains". Ladder track chains such as the Polaire GRIP and Spikes-Spider range only put chain over the tyre tread, so are not subject to these restrictions. They are also ideal for use on rear wheel drives where there is minimal space between the top of the wheel and the wheel arch.
It's really important to select the correct vehicle, paying attention to the year of the manufacture

Overview:
We think Yakima's FatCat 4 EVO is the most complete roof-mounted ski carrier available anywhere. The expanding hinge ('DoubleJoint™') which genuinely allows thicker skis or boards to be placed at the hinge end, and the feature which lifts the hinge end so that big bindings don't hit the vehicle roof ('SkiLift') are properly important features. Of course it also does the usual things that other premium carriers do, e.g. its big buttons can be thumped with a gloved hand to open the carrier, it fits all types of roof bar...

The FatCat 4 EVO has 55.5cm of loading length and can carry up to four pairs of skis (to 136mm at the tips) or two snowboards.
If you compare the FatCat with other ski carriers, one of the first things you'll notice is its low profile - this is because, when empty, the single thick squidgy rubber pad on the top bar fits between the two thick squidgy rubber pads on the bottom bar. Low profile = better aerodynamics (less noise, less drag), better looks. And the lower the ski carrier on the car roof, the less you have to stretch so the easier it is to fit skis and boards.
The crux of the FatCat's design is the DoubleJoint™ hinge system; the whole hinge assembly lifts up to accommodate a pair of fat skis or boards. Other ski carriers use the compression in their thick rubbers to allow skis to be fitted close to the hinge, which is a strain on the whole system. The SmartFlex hinge is also spring-loaded - so when you push on the opening catch the top of the ski carrier lifts up.
Deep bindings, especially on roof bars that are mounted very close to the car roof, are not a problem with the FatCat EVO because the hinge end can be lifted 9cm off the roof bar, using the integrated SkiLift feature. (The SkiLift is available for use as required - you don't need to use it.)
Summary of main features:
- 55.5cm loading width for up to 4 pairs of skis (up to 136 mm wide at the tip) or 2 snowboards
- Gloss black finish, low-profile design = a smart and sophisticated look
- The DoubleJoint spring-loaded hinge system expands to accommodate the thickest pairs of skis or boards, and allows for the low-profile design
- The integrated SkiLift (optional use) provides clearance for tall bindings
- The skis are locked in the carrier using Yakima's SKS locks
- The ski carrier is effectively locked to the bars when locked, because the securing levers are inside the carrier, between the lower rubbers
- The FatCat is opened with large rocker catches; these are very easy to use even with ski gloves or mitts
- The roof bar mountings (the straps have stainless steel cores) wrap around all bars to 88mm wide x 44mm deep - it's a very neat solution
- T-track aluminium bar fittings are also available separately
In summary, the Yakima FatCat 4 EVO is a really smart design, and very well made.

Delivery FAQs
When will my order arrive?
There are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays, except for postable items where Royal Mail has a Saturday delivery. Express Delivery orders placed on a Friday (before 1pm) should be delivered on the Monday or Tuesday, Express Delivery orders placed on a Saturday or Sunday should be delivered on the Tuesday or Wednesday. The arrangements for Very Heavy Items are different and are shown above.
What about Next Working Day delivery?
Most Express delivery orders will arrive on the next working day, if the order is placed before the cut-off time (see above). Some will arrive on the second working day if there has been a "split-delivery". So-called “split deliveries” happen when the couriers do not have enough trailer space for everything that should be moved around the UK, so they will load what they can and leave the rest for the next trailer.
Is my delivery day guaranteed?
No retailer or courier company can ever "guarantee" a Next Working Day delivery. As well as split deliveries, all courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems as can happen to everyone else, including snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address, or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.
Do I need to be at home?
We are very flexible with our deliveries and will aim to deliver to an address which suits you – this does not need to be your home address. Goods can usually be left without signature - we prefer this with roof boxes. There's a "Special Delivery Instructions" box in the checkout area where we'll ask you to choose a typical instruction and then amend it to suit your particular requirements.
