The FullSwing fits US and Australia style 2? hitch receivers only; it does NOT work with UK and European style 50mm tow balls.

The Yakima FullSwing, as its name suggests, swings away from the vehicle, even fully loaded with 4 bikes, to provide easy access to the vehicle's rear space. This is an ideal solution for vehicles with vertical tailgates, or with twin rear doors.

Other features and specifications:

  • Takes up to 4 bikes (maximum weight of any bike = 18kg)
  • Very quick and easy first-time assembly
  • The spring-loaded AutoPin™ automatically locates and secures the rack in the hitch receiver; a green indicator shows when the positioning is correct
  • The rack is tightened into the hitch receiver and then locked using the SpeedKnob™ locking system
  • The bike cross bars rest on fully padded arms for excellent bike protection
  • Anti-sway cradles do what it says on the tin
  • The bikes are quickly and securely fixed to the rack with zero-hassle padded ZipStrips™
  • The padded arms fold down when not in use
  • As well as locking the rack to the car, there's an integrated safety and security cable lock which should alwys be used; thread it through all bike frames before locking it
  • The locks are Yakima SKS (Same Key System) locks - you can have the same key number for all your Yakima products
  • A frame adapter (sold separately) is required for bikes without a crossbar (e.g. step-through, BMX, and kid’s bikes as well as some full suspension bikes) to allow them to hang securely from the two arms
  • There's even a built-in bottle opener!

Important fitting information: This rack fits US style 2" hitch receivers only, it does NOT work with UK 50mm tow balls. You should also check the 'Fitting information' tab to work out if this rack is suitable for your vehicle's hitch receiver - it's very important that you check these measurements before ordering.

Which vehicles can use a hitch receiver towing system? Hitch receivers are box section tubes into which a towing accessory or bike rack is inserted, held in place with a pin or bolt. The lighter-duty hitch receivers are made from 1.25? box section, the heavy-duty ones from 2? box section. Hitch receivers are the USA and e.g. Australia standard, but are rare in the EU and UK.

Generally, only large vehicles have tow bars that can take the weight of the bike carriers that are available for 2" hitch receivers - these are large 4x4s, pickup trucks, and medium and large vans.

The background here is that since 1998 tow bars for cars (UK and EU Vehicle type approval class M vehicles) have to be Type Approved to an EU standard; people are not allowed to weld up homemade, untested tow bars - this is a sensible safety rule!

We have so far not found a manufacturer who is making Type Approved hitch receivers for class M vehicles. The vehicles which are large enough to use 2? hitch receivers for any purpose, usually towing, are usually in Vehicle type approval class N1 ('Vehicles for the carriage of goods and having a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes') - you can find information about a vehicle's registration class on the gov.uk website, search for e.g. Get vehicle information from DVLA.

The UK's premier tow bar manufacturers are starting to produce hitch receivers for specified class N1 vehicles; it also seems that e.g. the 2023 Ford Rangers and 2023 VW Amarok (both in class N1) are being supplied as standard with 2? hitch receivers.

At the moment we have seen no documentary evidence to show that tow bars for class N1 need to be Type Approved; we will update this page as soon as we have new information to share.

*Dimensions: 100cm long from hitch bolt hole to endcaps (37cm with arms folded down) x 28cm wide at arms (center to center) x 112 tall. Approximately 30.5cm between back of mast and hitch bolt hole. Distance from the bolt hole to part of the rack nearest the vehicle is 15.25cm. The rack swings out 66cm from center of the receiver to the mast.

This rack only fits US style 2" hitch receivers (often defined as Class III or Class IV). 2" hitch receivers can only be fitted to category N1 vehicles, usually only pickups, some large 4x4s and medium and large vans. You can't use this size of hitch receiver on category M1 vehicles, which incudes normal cars and SUVs. You can check your vehicle classification on the DVLA website.

It's important that you don't exceed the weight limit of your hitch; add up the weight of your bikes plus the weight of the FullSwing (25.4kg).

Before you order a Yakima FullSwing it's really important to check that the type and position of your 2" hitch receiver is suitable. Click here for the vehicle-specific measurements you'll need to check.

Delivery FAQs

When will my order arrive?
There are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays, except for postable items where Royal Mail has a Saturday delivery. Express Delivery orders placed on a Friday (before 1pm) should be delivered on the Monday or Tuesday, Express Delivery orders placed on a Saturday or Sunday should be delivered on the Tuesday or Wednesday. The arrangements for Very Heavy Items are different and are shown above.

What about Next Working Day delivery?
Most Express delivery orders will arrive on the next working day, if the order is placed before the cut-off time (see above). Some will arrive on the second working day if there has been a "split-delivery". So-called “split deliveries” happen when the couriers do not have enough trailer space for everything that should be moved around the UK, so they will load what they can and leave the rest for the next trailer.

Is my delivery day guaranteed?
No retailer or courier company can ever "guarantee" a Next Working Day delivery. As well as split deliveries, all courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems as can happen to everyone else, including snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address, or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.

Do I need to be at home?
We are very flexible with our deliveries and will aim to deliver to an address which suits you – this does not need to be your home address. Goods can usually be left without signature - we prefer this with roof boxes. There's a "Special Delivery Instructions" box in the checkout area where we'll ask you to choose a typical instruction and then amend it to suit your particular requirements.
