The Yakima HangOver 4 is an innovative tilting carrier designed for use with pickups but, subject to tow bar nose weight, it can also be angled for use with class N1 4x4s and medium and large vans. A loaded HangOver 4 will impose unusually large forces on a tow bar system, especially if it's not mounted vertically; for this reason it may not be fitted to trailers, trailer tents or RVs / motor homes; the distance from the rear wheels to the hitch receiver pin-hole will be too great. Important fitting information: It fits US and Australia style 2? hitch receivers only; it doesn't work with UK 50mm tow balls. Other features and specifications:
This rack tilts far enough to open the tailgate on vehicles except for those with vertical tailgates. Important fitting information: This rack fits US style 2" hitch receivers only, it does NOT work with UK 50mm tow balls. You should also check the 'Fitting information' tab to work out if this rack is suitable for your vehicle's hitch receiver - it's very important that you check these measurements before ordering. Which vehicles can use a hitch receiver towing system? Hitch receivers are box section tubes into which a towing accessory or bike rack is inserted, held in place with a pin or bolt. The lighter-duty hitch receivers are made from 1.25? box section, the heavy-duty ones from 2? box section. Hitch receivers are the USA and e.g. Australia standard, but are rare in the EU and UK. Generally, only large vehicles have tow bars that can take the weight of the bike carriers that are available for 2" hitch receivers - these are large 4x4s, pickup trucks, and medium and large vans. The background here is that since 1998 tow bars for cars (UK and EU Vehicle type approval class M vehicles) have to be Type Approved to an EU standard; people are not allowed to weld up homemade, untested tow bars - this is a sensible safety rule! We have so far not found a manufacturer who is making Type Approved hitch receivers for class M vehicles. The vehicles which are large enough to use 2? hitch receivers for any purpose, usually towing, are usually in Vehicle type approval class N1 ('Vehicles for the carriage of goods and having a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes') - you can find information about a vehicle's registration class on the gov.uk website, search for e.g. Get vehicle information from DVLA. The UK's premier tow bar manufacturers are starting to produce hitch receivers for specified class N1 vehicles; it also seems that e.g. the 2023 Ford Rangers and 2023 VW Amarok (both in class N1) are being supplied as standard with 2? hitch receivers. At the moment we have seen no documentary evidence to show that tow bars for class N1 need to be Type Approved; we will update this page as soon as we have new information to share. |

This rack only fits US style 2" hitch receivers (often defined as Class III or Class IV). 2" hitch receivers can only be fitted to category N1 vehicles, usually only pickups, some large 4x4s and medium and large vans. You can't use this size of hitch receiver on category M1 vehicles, which incudes normal cars and SUVs. You can check your vehicle classification on the DVLA website. It's important that you don't exceed the weight limit of your hitch; add up the weight of your bikes plus the weight of the HangOver 4 (29.5kg). It's important you don't exceed the weight capabilities of your hitch; a tongue weight rating of at least 113.5 kg (250 lbs) is recommended for this rack. Before you order a Yakima HangOver 4 it's really important to check that the type and position of your 2" hitch receiver is suitable. Deciding which bike carriers to buy is not always easy, especially as you may not have had experience of using bike carriers before. We hope that our buying guides provide useful guidance about which bike carrier 'strategy' will be most appropriate for your circumstances, as well as highlighting the best features of particular models. We also have troubleshooting FAQs - for example, some customers struggle at first to fit four bikes onto a tow ball carrier, and wonder whether a different carrier would allow the bikes to be spaced wider apart. (It won't, but we have some good tips which make bike fitting much easier.) Our bike carriers Exchange Scheme covers roof mounting and tow ball mounting bike carriers only. Rear door mounting / strap on carriers are not included, and nor are roof bars. It allows you to exchange within 90 days of invoice date. Most exchanges are for roof mounting upgrades, or are tow ball carriers with very basic tilting systems being exchanged for easy to use sliding / tilting carriers. These are the rules of the bike carriers Exchange Scheme:

Bike carriers with 7 pin plugs Wheel support bike carriers which are supplied with 7 pin plugs usually only include rear lights, brake lights and indicator lights, which is why they are often called ‘3 function lights’. Unusually, Thule bike carriers with 7 pin plugs also include a fog light; this works when plugged into 7 pin electrics, but it does not work when plugged into 13 pin electrics via an adapter. Bike carriers with 13 pin plugs Bike carriers which are supplied with 13 pin plugs include a fog light and reversing light, as well as rear lights, brake lights and indicator lights – which is why they are often called ‘5 function lights’. If these are plugged into 13 pin electrics then all 5 functions will work. If they are plugged into 7 pin electrics via an adapter then the fog light should work, but the reversing light on the bike carrier will not work. Please note These notes assume that your tow bar electrics have been wired correctly! Tow bar wiring in the digital age is much more complicated than it used to be when everything was analogue. Our experience is that if you are having lighting problems, e.g. a fog light does not work in 7 pin tow bar electrics, the problem is much more likely to be caused by the wiring, not by a dud bulb in the bike carrier. |
