The Yakima StageTwo is a seriously good bike rack, designed to carry almost all bikes, including heavier e-bikes and those with fat tyres and boost hubs. The bikes are held by their front and rear wheels only, using the innovative StrongArm™ hooks and wheel rim straps - so nothing touches the frame or forks. There's an easy-to-reach tilt lever (located at the front of the rack) which allows a loaded carrier to be tilted for easy access to the boot space or, when unloaded, moved from the horizontal to the vertical to keep the vehicle within the parking bay and the carrier out of harm's way. The StageTwo is supplied partially assembled - very few steps are needed to have it up and running. The bike arms and wheel trays bolt to the frame. The main-frame is tightened and then locked into the receiver using the SpeedKnob™ locking system, or you can fir the frame to your hitch before you install the wheel trays or arms for the first time. Other features:
The StageTwo tilts far enough to open the tailgate of the pickups and large SUVs we've tested it on. It won't tilt far enough to allow a vertically mounted tailgate, or twin rear doors, to be opened - but see below for the BackSwing accessory which moves the whole rack to the side of the vehicle. Important fitting information: The StageTwo fits US and Australia style 2" hitch receivers only; it doesn't work with UK 50mm tow balls Which vehicles can use a hitch receiver towing system? Hitch receivers are box section tubes into which a towing accessory or bike rack is inserted, held in place with a pin or bolt. The lighter-duty hitch receivers are made from 1.25" box section, the heavy-duty ones from 2" box section. Hitch receivers are the USA and e.g. Australia standard, but are rare in the EU and UK. Generally, only large vehicles have tow bars that can take the weight of the bike carriers that are available for 2" hitch receivers - these are large 4x4s, pickup trucks, and medium and large vans. The background here is that since 1998 tow bars for cars (UK and EU Vehicle type approval class M vehicles) have to be Type Approved to an EU standard; people are not allowed to weld up homemade, untested tow bars - this is a sensible safety rule! We have so far not found a manufacturer who is making Type Approved hitch receivers for class M vehicles. The vehicles which are large enough to use 2" hitch receivers for any purpose, usually towing, are usually in Vehicle type approval class N1 ('Vehicles for the carriage of goods and having a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes') - you can find information about a vehicle's registration class on the gov.uk website, search for e.g. Get vehicle information from DVLA. The UK's premier tow bar manufacturers are starting to produce hitch receivers for specified class N1 vehicles; it also seems that e.g. the 2023 Ford Rangers and 2023 VW Amarok (both in class N1) are being supplied as standard with 2" hitch receivers. At the moment we have seen no documentary evidence to show that tow bars for class N1 need to be Type Approved; we will update this page as soon as we have new information to share. |
This rack only fits US style 2" hitch receivers (often defined as Class III or Class IV) 2" hitch receivers can only be fitted to category N1 vehicles, usually only pickups, some large 4x4s and medium and large vans. You can't use this size of hitch receiver on category M1 vehicles, which incudes normal cars and SUVs. You can check your vehicle classification on the DVLA website. It's important that you don't exceed the weight limit of your hitch; add up the weight of your bikes plus the weight of the StageTwo (30kg). Before you order a Yakima StageTwo it's really important to check that the type and position of your 2" hitch receiver is suitable. Deciding which bike carriers to buy is not always easy, especially as you may not have had experience of using bike carriers before. We hope that our buying guides provide useful guidance about which bike carrier 'strategy' will be most appropriate for your circumstances, as well as highlighting the best features of particular models. We also have troubleshooting FAQs - for example, some customers struggle at first to fit four bikes onto a tow ball carrier, and wonder whether a different carrier would allow the bikes to be spaced wider apart. (It won't, but we have some good tips which make bike fitting much easier.) Our bike carriers Exchange Scheme covers roof mounting and tow ball mounting bike carriers only. Rear door mounting / strap on carriers are not included, and nor are roof bars. It allows you to exchange within 90 days of invoice date. Most exchanges are for roof mounting upgrades, or are tow ball carriers with very basic tilting systems being exchanged for easy to use sliding / tilting carriers. These are the rules of the bike carriers Exchange Scheme:
This is how the exchange scheme works:
Please note that we can only collect exchange scheme items from mainland UK. |

Bike carriers with 7 pin plugs Wheel support bike carriers which are supplied with 7 pin plugs usually only include rear lights, brake lights and indicator lights, which is why they are often called ‘3 function lights’. Unusually, Thule bike carriers with 7 pin plugs also include a fog light; this works when plugged into 7 pin electrics, but it does not work when plugged into 13 pin electrics via an adapter. Bike carriers with 13 pin plugs Bike carriers which are supplied with 13 pin plugs include a fog light and reversing light, as well as rear lights, brake lights and indicator lights – which is why they are often called ‘5 function lights’. If these are plugged into 13 pin electrics then all 5 functions will work. If they are plugged into 7 pin electrics via an adapter then the fog light should work, but the reversing light on the bike carrier will not work. Please note These notes assume that your tow bar electrics have been wired correctly! Tow bar wiring in the digital age is much more complicated than it used to be when everything was analogue. Our experience is that if you are having lighting problems, e.g. a fog light does not work in 7 pin tow bar electrics, the problem is much more likely to be caused by the wiring, not by a dud bulb in the bike carrier. |
