There has long been a market for carrying luggage boxes behind vehicles rather than on the roof, mainly for ease of access. Most of these rear boxes are quite basic, and are usually fixed to separate platforms or onto tow bar mounted bike carriers. Only one brand that we know of has really given this sector the attention it deserves, TowBox, a brand created and developed over more than 15 years by Spain’s premier designer and manufacturer of towbar systems, Enganches Aragón. TowBox have created a range of rear boxes that are strong, secure, and water-resistant to IP44. The injection-molded 330L box has an improved seal, making it even more water-resistant. TowBox Camper is ideal for vans - it can rotate on an arm 180 degrees away from the tow ball - leaving plenty of space to open the tailgate or rear doors on a van. You move the TowBox Camper away from the tow ball on a jockey wheel, meaning it is easy to manoeuvre. As well as a jockey wheel to slide it away from the vehicle, this TowBox even has trolley-style wheels, allowing the box, empty or loaded, to be wheeled from your base and placed onto the towball. The lid opens wide on spring struts, which hold the lid wide open while you are loading the box. TowBox Camper is available in two models; this version has a longer arm (for doors and tailgates up to 1910 mm), and is ideal for the VW Transporter, Ford Transit and Mercedes Vito/Sprinter (as well as other medium and larger vans). You can check the diagram in the images if you want to make sure this version will work with your vehicle. A version with a longer arm for wider vans is also available. These boxes are very stylish, with really smart five-function LED lights with progressive indicators. They have been designed with efficient aerodynamics in mind. Rear-mounted boxes produce less drag than roof-mounted boxes, and are generally a better solution for electric vehicles. There’s no doubt that, all other things being equal (vehicle load weight, driving style and speed, and wind speed) a 330 litre roof box will use more of the vehicle's energy than a 330 litre box mounted behind the vehicle, although on the downside a rear mounted box will of course impose many more limitations on shape and size than a roof box, or an open roof rack. Additional drag is of particular importance for electric cars because the extra energy used will reduce the range available before recharging is necessary – fossil-fuelled vehicles usually have a longer range, can refuel much more quickly, and can carry their own extra fuel if necessary. Note: If the towbar ball is positioned higher than 435 mm from the ground, you will need to purchase the TVC08R000 wheel extension (available separately). TowBox are manufactured in Zaragoza (Saragossa) in Spain's Aragon region by Enganches Aragón, an ISO 9001:2015 company that is now over 30 years old, and is a major European manufacturer of tow bar systems. The first TowBox entered the market in 2009, with the TowBox Camper 330L launched in 2025 - all models have been refined over time. |
