Whispbar roof bars package - S43 Aero-X silver bars

Code: PR_S43_043

Whispbar's Aero-X roof rail bars are almost silent in use and have a negligible impact on fuel consumption. And because they look superb you're likely to leave them in place semi-permanently.

The amount of gear you can carry on the Aero-X is limited by the length of the T-track slot, so if you do need to carry e.g. a roof box and bike carriers, please also check out the "through bar" option with fitting kit 328.

Whispbar's Aero-X roof rail bars not only include the award winning aerofoil shaped bar but are ultra-low profile; they fit between the roof rails. If you're just carrying a roof box or a couple of bikes or kayaks this might be ideal, but if you want to maximise the load carrying potential of your car then you should be looking first at Whispbar's "through bar" system with fitting kit 328. Please note that it doesn't matter if the edge of a roof box rests on the plastic covers at each end of the Aero-X bars - just be sure before ordering that the T-track slot is as long as the distance between the roof bar fitting points in the roof box.

Basic geometry:

  • These bars fit to longitudinal roof rails which are between 86cm and 93cm apart (up to 96cm apart when the bars are at full stretch).
  • The T-track slots on these bars are between 67cm and 74cm long (up to 77cm long at full stretch), i.e. they are 19cm shorter than the distance between the roof rails.
  • If e.g. your roof rails are 90cm apart (inside face to inside face) then the T-track slot will be 90cm less 19cm = 71cm long.

Other features and specifications:

  • These bars look good and sound good, but they also feel good. They're beautifully made, are supplied fully assembled, and are relatively quick to fit.
  • They have a maximum loading limit of 75kg - but please check your vehicle's load limit as it may be less than this.
  • All roof boxes, and all accessories that can be fitted to Atera or Thule aerobars, can be fitted to Whispbars.
  • Other manufacturers supply a rubber strip that you need to cut and press into the bar between the accessory fixings. But not Whispbar – the Smartfill rubber is already in place, within the slot. Another first for Whispbar!
  • Please note that because Whispbars are 85mm wide you will need T-track adapters to fit almost all products except a limited range of roof boxes. If you are buying Whispbars on their own, check your roof box fittings to see if they are wide enough and be sure to order what you need!

Whispbar was recently purchased by Yakima, one of the two largest brands in the global car rack systems sector. Whispbar was the culmination of many years of design and innovation by Hubco Automotive; their chief designer transferred his aeronautical design experience and know how to the roof rack sector, working closely with the engineering school at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

To summarise, Whispbar is the bells and whistles system without the whistles!

But don’t just take our word for it – hear it for yourself. Hubco engineers built a mini wind tunnel when they launched Whispbar at the Frankfurt Automechanika trade fair. Turn up the speaker volume and be blown away!

Experience the Whispbar in action

The aim of this note is to persuade you that kayaks should always be tied to the carrying vehicle at both bow and stern.

Always tie down at both bow and stern

Untied kayaks have, in our experience, the greatest potential for a roof bar or kayak carrier failure. The massive forces that untied kayaks can generate have even been known to snap roof bar fixing bolts with the result that a complete assembly of roof bars and kayaks has ended up on the road. We know that this has happened with almost every brand of roof bar, and regardless of whether the kayaks are on a special carrier or just strapped to the bars.

You need to fix bow and stern lines, probably using the front and rear screw-in towing eyes to get strong and accessible fixing points on the vehicle. Kayak shops should be able to provide suitable 'paracord' for this purpose. Alternatively, we have sets of straps available that are perfect for the job and are really easy to use. Yakima make some excellent Bow/Stern tie down straps and Thule makes the QuickDraw 838 which we have listed together with every kayak carrier we sell.

Please note that kayaks should be strapped to the roof bars, or to kayak carriers, using straps that are suitable for the purpose, e.g. 25mm polypropylene straps with strong buckles. Bungee cords must never be used.

Please also note that all roof bar instructions point out the dangers of carrying unsecured long items, as of course do all kayak carrier instructions.

If you tie down your kayaks properly you almost certainly won't experience a product failure. If you don't you may or may not get away with it. If there is a disaster and the kayaks end up on the road, separated from the vehicle, then you were not using tie downs and you have subjected the roof bars to forces for which they were not designed. The costs of sorting this out are yours, not ours, and you may also have difficulties with your insurers.

We're sorry to be so firm about this, but "things coming off the tops of cars" is the stuff of nightmares, and we want to do all we can to prevent accidents of this sort from happening.

Delivery charges and arrangements:

We charge a contribution towards delivery costs, depending on what you order, where you live, and how quickly you want the goods.

These are our standard charges; there are usually surcharges for all offshore destinations and some remote postcodes, especially for Very Heavy Items (defined below):

Orders involving a roof box, and Very Heavy Items

    • Standard delivery (3 to 5 working days) = £14.50
    • Express delivery (1 to 3 working days) and Very Heavy Items = £19.50

AutoSock, and items which are small enough to be posted, e.g. small spare parts

    • Standard delivery (3 to 5 working days) = £4.95
    • Express delivery (1 to 3 working days) = £6.95

    All other products

    • Standard delivery (3 to 5 working days) = £6.50
    • Express delivery (1 to 3 working days) = £9.50

All orders for Express delivery need to be received by 1pm.

    Very Heavy Items

Roof tents and some other items that are very heavy or unusually large are, for safer and more careful handling, best carried by two people.

Very Heavy Items are delivered via the ArrowXL 2-person delivery service. All other products that are part of the same order will usually also be delivered by ArrowXL, at the same time as the Very Heavy Item.

Please note that deliveries from ArrowXL need to be signed for, e.g. by a neighbour if you are not at home, or you can have the goods delivered to a different address.

There is a £25 surcharge for Very Heavy Item deliveries to the Grampian area, Scottish Highlands, any GB delivery including a sea crossing, and Northern Ireland. There is a £50 surcharge for Very Heavy Item deliveries to the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and the Republic of Ireland. Deliveries to all these places will take longer than normal, sometimes much longer - delivery timings are indicated in the Shopping Basket.

When will my order arrive?
There are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays, except for postable items where Royal Mail has a Saturday delivery. Express Delivery orders placed on a Friday (before 1pm) should be delivered on the Monday or Tuesday, Express Delivery orders placed on a Saturday or Sunday should be delivered on the Tuesday or Wednesday. The arrangements for Very Heavy Items are different and are shown above.

What about Next Working Day delivery?
We have offered a reliable Next Working Day service for well over 20 years but, due to the pressure on the couriers caused by the coronavirus crisis and the huge increase in online shopping, we can no longer be confident about the delivery date, which is why we now call the service ‘Express delivery’. Most Express delivery orders will arrive on the next or second working day, but some will arrive on the second or third working day, or be split between these days. So-called “split deliveries” happen when the couriers do not have enough trailer space for everything that should be moved around the UK, so they will load what they can and leave the rest for the next trailer.

Is my delivery day guaranteed?
No retailer or courier company can ever "guarantee" a Next Working Day delivery. As well as split deliveries, all courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems as can happen to everyone else, including snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address, or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.

Do I need to be at home?
We are very flexible with our deliveries and will aim to deliver to an address which suits you – this does not need to be your home address. Goods can usually be left without signature - we prefer this with roof boxes. There's a "Special Delivery Instructions" box in the checkout area where we'll ask you to choose a typical instruction and then amend it to suit your particular requirements.

These bars are particularly low profile and are positioned closer to the roof than most other roof bars; please be aware of this when loading the bars.

If you need to carry skis with high bindings it might be better to consider a bar that sits higher on the roof to prevent the bindings from touching the roof of the vehicle.

If you have a vehicle with a sunroof there is unlikely to be enough space to operate the type of sun roof that lifts above the roof; again, choose a bar that sits higher on the roof, e.g. a Whispbar with kit 328.

The space you have to fit gear will be dependent on how much space you have between your roof rails. If you need to carry more than just a roof box or a couple of bike carriers (e.g. a roof box + bike carriers or 3 to 4 bike carriers) you will need to consider a longer bar ( e.g. Whispbar 'through bars' with kit 328).

Yakima has a comprehensive network of international distributors, so we do not sell or ship Yakima branded products overseas, including to Northern Ireland or to the Republic of Ireland. We hope you can find the Yakima products you want, locally.
