Why it's important to select the correct vehicle and tyre size
Vehicle
There are a surprising number of vehicles that cannot use traditional snowchains, the types that put chain on the inside of the wheel as well as on the tread. This is usually because there is not enough space between the wheels and the shock absorbers; this can be a problem for ordinary SUVs and 4x4s as well as for high performance cars.
You will find this important information in your car handbook - please check this before using your snowchains! Our database is intended to do the basic work for you but, with so many new vehicles and tyre sizes, it should only ever be treated as a guide.
Tyre size
Please also check your tyre size - if you buy incorrectly-sized chains they will be either too tight or too loose.
Ladder track chains
The good news is that car handbooks usually only refer to "traditional snowchains". Ladder track chains such as the Polaire GRIP and Spikes-Spider range only put chain over the tyre tread, so are not subject to these restrictions. They are also ideal for use on rear wheel drives where there is minimal space between the top of the wheel and the wheel arch.
How do I check my tyre size?
How do I check my tyre size?
You are looking for three numbers (occasionally just two numbers) shown on the edge of the tyre, e.g. 195 / 65 - R15
For info, what do these numbers mean?
195 is the tyre width in mm. 65 is the profile, the distance from the edge of the rim to the top of the tread (the tyre "wall") in mm, expressed as a percentage of the width, i.e. the tyre wall is 127mm high in this example (195 x 65). 15 is the "rim size" in inches (a complicated measurement).

If you have chosen this product "by tyre size only", and the K-Summit XL is also shown, please think about the weight of your vehicle. The K-Summit is suitable for standard cars up to the 1,500kg mark, the K-Summit XL for larger vehicles (MPVs, SUVs, small 4x4s) up to 2,000kg. If in doubt, go for the heavier duty option. Thule's K-Summit is what we call a "Ladder track chain". It's fixed to a wheel bolt with a special adapter, winds on to the wheel when you start to move, places a ladder of chain around the face of the tyre, with no parts inside the wheel, and requires no additional tensioning. The external bracing mechanism, and the friction between the chain and the tyre, prevents it from coming off the wheel, especially during cornering. The hardened steel traction plates incorporate specially shaped "ice breaker" ridges; the chain elements are made from case-hardened manganese nickel (MnNi) alloy steel to provide an optimum combination of strength and hardness. Each K-Summit size comes as standard with 17mm, 19mm wheel bolt adapters. Because each K-Summit size fits a number of tyre sizes, some adjustment to the circumference of the ladder track is usually required first time out - this is easy to do, especially as K-Summits have a really clever spring loaded tensioning system. A few turns of an open ended 17mm spanner fits the adapter to the wheel bolt - a spanner with an insulated handle is supplied - and the rest is easy. There's a ratchet to take the strain and to make sure that the system is at an appropriate tension. Removing the K-Summit is also quick, clean and easy - loosen off the ratchet and pull the chain off the tyre. Other features: - K-Summits are supplied in a strong carrying bag, shaped so that it fits flush against the back of the rear seat, together with a pair of plastic gloves, a kneeling mat, and some emergency spare links (pliers are required).
- We have a full spare parts programme
- All Thule snow chains meet the requirements of Austria's Ö-Norm 5117 and Germany's TÜV.
Excellent!

Delivery FAQs
When will my order arrive?
There are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays, except for postable items where Royal Mail has a Saturday delivery. Express Delivery orders placed on a Friday (before 1pm) should be delivered on the Monday or Tuesday, Express Delivery orders placed on a Saturday or Sunday should be delivered on the Tuesday or Wednesday. The arrangements for Very Heavy Items are different and are shown above.
What about Next Working Day delivery?
Most Express delivery orders will arrive on the next working day, if the order is placed before the cut-off time (see above). Some will arrive on the second working day if there has been a "split-delivery". So-called “split deliveries” happen when the couriers do not have enough trailer space for everything that should be moved around the UK, so they will load what they can and leave the rest for the next trailer.
Is my delivery day guaranteed?
No retailer or courier company can ever "guarantee" a Next Working Day delivery. As well as split deliveries, all courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems as can happen to everyone else, including snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address, or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.
Do I need to be at home?
We are very flexible with our deliveries and will aim to deliver to an address which suits you – this does not need to be your home address. Goods can usually be left without signature - we prefer this with roof boxes. There's a "Special Delivery Instructions" box in the checkout area where we'll ask you to choose a typical instruction and then amend it to suit your particular requirements.
