We spend a lot of time handling and testing roof boxes, so can assure you that the new Yakima SkyBox Pro boxes are top notch for build quality and features - and they also look exceptionally smart and sophisticated. Yakima's ’SuperLatch™’ locking system, with its solid external "Close lid to lock" handles, is a key feature.

These are really, really nice boxes, and very exclusive!

Condition report: Has been used - still in good condition with a few scuffs and scratches, mainly on the base. See the images above for more detail.

What's not to like about Yakima's SkyBox Pro roof boxes! They are exceptionally well made, good looking, aerodynamic boxes, very thoughtfully designed and engineered, with a number of excellent innovations including their locking and mounting systems.

They have a "Just pull the lid down to lock the box" system, as also found in the best KAMEI and INNO boxes. Yakima call their system 'SuperLatch’. "Close lid to lock" systems get around the biggest problem of all other central locking systems which is "How do you shut and lock a fully laden box, especially on a tall vehicle?" The answer is that you need to hold the front and the back of the box tightly closed - which needs two hands, held wide apart - while at the same time needing a third hand to turn the centrally located key and lock the box. It shouldn't take two people to lock a roof box!

Yakima take their central locking a stage further by stiffening up and adding weight to the lid with reinforcing ribs - they claim that SkyBox lids are 3 x stiffer than competitor boxes - which makes it possible to open and close the lid with one hand. The base of the box is also reinforced to prevent it sagging when heavily loaded. Yakima boast that you can open and close these boxes with one hand, which is particulary useful on tall vehicles when you need to grip the vehicle with your other hand.

The visible parts of the SuperLatch system are the two solid external handles - one on each side because all SkyBox Pros are dual side opening. These handles include Yakima's SKS locks; you'll need the key to open the box, and you can't lock the box to remove the key if it's not properly closed. The lid has a small pull shelf for easy closing; there's also a detachable red lanyard on both sides of the lid which will make closing easier on tall vehicles.

A lot of technical work was done on the aerodynamics to minimise wind noise and drag. The result is a range of boxes with very clean lines, including unusual and subtle front to back curves in both base and lid which helps to make these boxes look so good.

Yakima is with Thule one of the two biggest worldwide car rack brands. Yakima is based in Beaverton, Oregon (USA), and named after the city in Washington state where it was founded in 1973. Yakima now has a European headquarters, so for sure you'll start seeing more of their excellent products on our roads over the next few years.

Other features and general information:

  • The SkyBox Pro 16 is 206 x 91 x 38cm, with a capacity of 453 litres (approximately 16 cubic feet). See also the Specifications tab.
  • Box weight 23.6kg, loading weight 75kg. (As always, please note the weight of the box, the roof bars, and your vehicle's maximum permitted roof load.)
  • The dual side opening on this wide box makes it very easy to fit to the roof bars.
  • The box to bar fittings are very easy to use and take up minimal space in the box. They're based on a cam system and only need adjusting to your roof bars the first time you use them. Press down to close, lift up to release. They fit bars up to 88mm wide x 44mm deep, which includes all the roof bars we sell.
  • There's no option for aluminium roof bar T-track adapters at the moment, but there'll probably be space for one roof mounted bike carrier, especially if you use aluminium roof bars which stick out beyond the roof bar feet, leaving space for a bike carrier T-track fitting.
  • The lid opens very wide on the double struts, making for easier loading and unloading. These struts are almost as smooth as gas struts.
  • Three point central locking on both sides of the box.
  • The rear of the box is shaped to accommodate hatchback and estate car tailgates. If your tailgate includes a large spoiler it would be particularly sensible to look at Yakima's "Tailgate clash guidelines" - see tab.
  • There's an 'antislip cargo base pad' to help prevent your gear from sliding around; also 3 straps which should be used.
  • The onyx black gloss finish to the lid includes some scratch-resistance as well as UV protection.
  • There's a natty "Yakima red" lanyard for the key, or perhaps for the spare key.
  • TÜV approved and City Crash tested.

Delivery FAQs

When will my order arrive?
There are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays, except for postable items where Royal Mail has a Saturday delivery. Express Delivery orders placed on a Friday (before 1pm) should be delivered on the Monday or Tuesday, Express Delivery orders placed on a Saturday or Sunday should be delivered on the Tuesday or Wednesday. The arrangements for Very Heavy Items are different and are shown above.

What about Next Working Day delivery?
We have offered a reliable Next Working Day service for well over 20 years but, due to the pressure on the couriers caused by the coronavirus crisis and the huge increase in online shopping, we can no longer be confident about the delivery date, which is why we now call the service ‘Express delivery’. Most Express delivery orders will arrive on the next or second working day, but some will arrive on the second or third working day, or be split between these days. So-called “split deliveries” happen when the couriers do not have enough trailer space for everything that should be moved around the UK, so they will load what they can and leave the rest for the next trailer.

Is my delivery day guaranteed?
No retailer or courier company can ever "guarantee" a Next Working Day delivery. As well as split deliveries, all courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems as can happen to everyone else, including snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address, or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.

Do I need to be at home?
We are very flexible with our deliveries and will aim to deliver to an address which suits you – this does not need to be your home address. Goods can usually be left without signature - we prefer this with roof boxes. There's a "Special Delivery Instructions" box in the checkout area where we'll ask you to choose a typical instruction and then amend it to suit your particular requirements.
