Polaire XP16 16mm 4x4 snow chains (pair) size 106

£125.00
RRP:
Code: POXP16106

These are top quality "no frills" traditional snow chains, excellent value for money, quick and easy to fit. They include all the features we expect to see in a premium snow chain, and the packaging is excellent by any standards.

They're entirely suitable for occasional use in the UK or on e.g. a ski-drive holiday.

This is a great value pair of snow chains, quick and easy to fit and remove, suitable for on road use on 4x4s, pickups, vans, and single-wheeled minibuses.

Polaire's XP16 range has been designed to compete with budget chains on price, and also to offer some features that are usually only found in the premium brands (e.g. König, RUD). The main difference is that their chain steel quality isn't as good as König's - these Polaire chains are of course entirely suitable for on road use anywhere, e.g. occasional use in the UK or on ski-drive holidays - but the Polaire and König fitting systems are very similar, and Polaire's carrying case is the best we've seen anywhere.

They're the best 4x4 chains under £100 that we've ever stocked!

Additional notes:

  • These Polaire chains are made from case-hardened manganese nickel (MnNi) alloy steel to provide an optimum combination of strength and hardness.
  • Suitable for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
  • Chains will wear out if driven on tarmac or concrete. These XP16 chains can be reversed and fitted 'inside out' on the tyre so that both sides get equal wear, helping them to last much longer.
  • Each XP16 chain link is 16mm high, D-shaped to make it bite well into snow and ice.
  • Supplied in a strong zipped fabric carrying case, together with a pair of plastic gloves, and a couple of emergency spare links (pliers are required).
  • All Polaire chains meet the requirements of Austria's Ö-Norm 5117 and Germany's TÜV.

Important safety information: The purchase and use of snow chains is a technical business, and a complex one to manage in the online environment. These traditional chains will fit around the tyres you have chosen but it's possible that they're not suitable for use with the combination of your tyre size and your particular make and model of car.

If you have only chosen your tyre size to reach this page, without reference to your type of car, please visit our "What fits my vehicle?" database via the link "Select Your Vehicle" to check whether they are approved or not. Our suppliers have provided this database information, but it must be treated only as a guide to what is likely to be permitted - it's not intended to be a substitute for you checking your own vehicle handbook.

  • If you find your car and tyre size, and only a small number of chains are listed, maybe only one option, these are your only safe options.
  • In any event, please check your vehicle handbook to see what it says about the use of snow chains. If it says, for example, "The use of snow chains is not permitted" or "No snow chains with a link size wider than 10mm may be used", this is important information! But also note that what we call "Ladder track chains" or "Front-fitting chains" may always be used, unless your driving wheels are just about touching the wheelarches and there is obviously no space to fit anything to them.

Delivery charges and arrangements:

We charge a contribution towards delivery costs, depending on what you order, where you live, and how quickly you want the goods.

These are our standard charges; there are usually surcharges for all offshore destinations and some remote postcodes, especially for Very Heavy Items (defined below):

Orders involving a roof box, and Very Heavy Items

    • Standard delivery (3 to 5 working days) = £14.50
    • Express delivery (1 to 3 working days) and Very Heavy Items = £19.50

AutoSock, and items which are small enough to be posted, e.g. small spare parts

    • Standard delivery (3 to 5 working days) = £4.95
    • Express delivery (1 to 3 working days) = £6.95

    All other products

    • Standard delivery (3 to 5 working days) = £6.50
    • Express delivery (1 to 3 working days) = £9.50

All orders for Express delivery need to be received by 1pm.

    Very Heavy Items

Roof tents and some other items that are very heavy or unusually large are, for safer and more careful handling, best carried by two people.

Very Heavy Items are delivered via the ArrowXL 2-person delivery service. All other products that are part of the same order will usually also be delivered by ArrowXL, at the same time as the Very Heavy Item.

Please note that deliveries from ArrowXL need to be signed for, e.g. by a neighbour if you are not at home, or you can have the goods delivered to a different address.

There is a £25 surcharge for Very Heavy Item deliveries to the Grampian area, Scottish Highlands, any GB delivery including a sea crossing, and Northern Ireland. There is a £50 surcharge for Very Heavy Item deliveries to the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and the Republic of Ireland. Deliveries to all these places will take longer than normal, sometimes much longer - delivery timings are indicated in the Shopping Basket.

When will my order arrive?
There are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays, except for postable items where Royal Mail has a Saturday delivery. Express Delivery orders placed on a Friday (before 1pm) should be delivered on the Monday or Tuesday, Express Delivery orders placed on a Saturday or Sunday should be delivered on the Tuesday or Wednesday. The arrangements for Very Heavy Items are different and are shown above.

What about Next Working Day delivery?
We have offered a reliable Next Working Day service for well over 20 years but, due to the pressure on the couriers caused by the coronavirus crisis and the huge increase in online shopping, we can no longer be confident about the delivery date, which is why we now call the service ‘Express delivery’. Most Express delivery orders will arrive on the next or second working day, but some will arrive on the second or third working day, or be split between these days. So-called “split deliveries” happen when the couriers do not have enough trailer space for everything that should be moved around the UK, so they will load what they can and leave the rest for the next trailer.

Is my delivery day guaranteed?
No retailer or courier company can ever "guarantee" a Next Working Day delivery. As well as split deliveries, all courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems as can happen to everyone else, including snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address, or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.

Do I need to be at home?
We are very flexible with our deliveries and will aim to deliver to an address which suits you – this does not need to be your home address. Goods can usually be left without signature - we prefer this with roof boxes. There's a "Special Delivery Instructions" box in the checkout area where we'll ask you to choose a typical instruction and then amend it to suit your particular requirements.

There are two parts to our snow chains offer this year:

(1) Clearance prices on many top branded snow chains, including RUD and Thule - an amazing opportunity for those who are quick off the mark! Thule (who are the biggest brand in the car racks market) have sold their snow chains division; the same chains are now being sold under the König brand. Thule branded chains have the same specifications as the König branded versions - all that has changed is the name on the chain and the name on the box.

(2)   Multibuy discounts - significant discounts if you buy two pairs of snow chains at the same time, or one pair of chains and one pair of AutoSock: If you do either of these things, we will discount the snow chains as follows:

  • König, Polaire and Spikes-Spider snow chains - at least 10% off!
  • INNO, Maggi, RUD and Thule snow chains - at least 20% off! Up to 30% off where we have large overstocks.

As usual, you change the quantities in the Shopping Basket.

Many customers will, for example, use snow chains on their driving wheels for Alpine use, and use AutoSock on the non-driving wheels, especially if these are the steering wheels. Also note that AutoSock work very well in very wet snow, even on slush, where snowchains are often not suitable because they can't get any grip in the snow. So having both AutoSock and snowchains makes sense from at least two different perspectives.

Snow chain recommendations

We are snow chain specialists, so we stock a large number of brands, and many different types of chain. Regular chain users usually know what they're looking for, and we hope they find it on this site, but many customers ask for further guidance about what they should buy. So here goes:

(1) Please use the filters on the previous page to narrow your choice, and also check out the Basic snow chain information links at the top of the previous page. Note that this year we are aiming to clear our overstocks, offering premium brand chains, including Thule and RUD, at massive discounts, with some at less than cost price. There’s a Clearance filter – it’s worth a look!

(2) The big differences between the European branded chains and most of the Chinese chains are (a) steel quality and (b) attention to manufacturing details. There is a market for cheaper chains than the ones we offer, but it’s not a market we want to be in, especially as the price differences between questionable and good are often only about £20.

(3) These are our recommendations for different types of snow chain, based on many years’ experience of testing and using chains:

Chains for cars / small vans

  • Traditional basic chains: Look for Thule CB series chains being sold off cheap. They have the same specifications as the latest König version, just a different brand name, so this is a great opportunity to grab a bargain. (Thule have sold their snow chains business to König.) Otherwise, the Polaire XP9 (cars) are good value at under £50.
  • Traditional self-tensioning chains: Thule CG-9, Thule CL-10, Thule CS-10 if available - see above. If they've sold out, choose the RUD easy2go, because easy2go are strong, well made, and the bungee type of self-tensioning system is the most reliable. If these are also sold out, the König CG-9 chains really are good, with a clever self-tensioning system.

Chains for SUVs / heavy 4x4s / medium and large vans

  • Traditional basic chains: Check Clearance for Thule XB-16, Maggi RAPID-MATIC V5, RUD Grip V. If sold out, then without hesitation we recommend the Polaire XP16 – a really well specified chain at an excellent price, with innovative packaging.
  • Traditional self-tensioning chains: Thule XG-Pro, or the König XG-Pro if the Thule are not listed.
  • Ladder track chains / front-fixing chains: look at both the Polaire GRIP and the Spikes-Spider systems. The GRIP has many unique features, most obviously their polyurethane tread which allows them to be driven (at low speed) on tarmac - customers who are basically dressed for office work will really appreciate this. The Spikes-Spider SPORT (vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes) are the fastest to fit and remove, and can be resized. Both models are ideal for quick and easy fitting to vehicles which don’t have enough space in the wheel arch to get your hands in to fit traditional chains. The Polaire GRIP are at the leading edge of snow chain design; they’re outstanding.

Drivers of very heavy 4x4s and large vans should check out the equally fast-fitting Spikes-Spider ALPINE Pro, choice (for example) of many emergency services in Germany and Switzerland, effectively turning tyres into tracks.
